It’s September 1st, and all the students and staff are back from their summer vacations. Many of our students spent time overseas this summer, with Grade 7 going to AIC in New Zealand and some Grade 8 students did a home stay in England and Canada. Many staff traveled overseas as well. Some accompanied the 7th graders to New Zealand, but many international staff visited their home countries as well – Australia, Canada, England, India, Mauritius, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the USA. Now, everyone is back and sharing stories about their summer activities. We’re particularly excited about the stories we’ll be hearing – in English – from our Grade 7 students.

We had a student assembly during first period, and certificates were given to students who excelled in sporting events and calligraphy over the summer. Maybe they’ll be ready for the 2012 Summer Olympics… well, calligraphy isn’t an Olympic sport – but it should be!

On the weekend three AICJ teachers completed an Olympic distance triathlon on the beautiful island of Sagijima, near Mihara. It was the first full triathlon for AICJ English teacher Mr Tohill, the second event for Teacher of English Mr Muller, who also completed the Miyajima Triathlon in June, and the event made an amazing total of 181 triathlons for veteran multisportsman Dave Shepherd, who teaches, and indeed lives, Physical Education.

The weather was blazing hot, reaching a boiling 37.C around midday when the competitors were on the last stage of the race, the gruelling 10km run. Having swum 1500m in a frenetic sea battle along the racing lane, and then having bolted around the island four times on their cycles to complete the 42km cycling leg, athletes then had to contend with tiredness, sore legs, dehydration and mental fatigue to win through and finish the race.

Mr Shepherd cruised in at just under 3 hours, while Mr Muller and Mr Tohill finished the race together at 3:24mins. When asked what he thought of the event, Mr Muller said "It was great. It was HOT! It was really to go with such a friendly group of Japanese people, our supporters were fantastic, and it was good to see island life, and meet the locals who live out there."

The Sagijima Triathlon will only be around for five more years, as the population on the tiny island is falling fast. The average age of residents is now a venerable 65 years old, sponsors are going out of business, and a lack of volunteers mean this magical character race keep going - so get out there and give it a go while you still can!

Congratulations to all of them for getting out there and giving it their best!

夏休みがあけて学校にはまた生徒たちの活気ある声が戻ってきました！

暦の上では秋に入ったとはいえ夏の日差しが続く毎日ですが、ふと目をやると
すぐそこには秋の訪れを感じます。秋といえば読書、スポーツ、芸術、食欲・・
といろいろなことが取り上げられる季節です。本校では前期のまとめの試験、
修学（研修）旅行、文化祭の行事が予定されています。これからだんだんと
過ごしやすい時期になりますので、普段以上に生徒たち自らが主体的に活動し
実り多い行事になることを期待して、教職員一同サポートして参りたいと思います。

今日はGrade 9（中学3年生）の男子の体育授業風景を紹介します。

現在はバスケットボールをし、ハーフコートを使いミニゲームなどをしていました。
チームで協力をし声を掛け合い、いかにしてゴールを決めるかなど戦術を考えていました。

なかなか上手にゴールが決まらないチームもあった様ですが、とても楽しそうに
行っていました。

９月になり、体育の授業（女子 Grade 9:中学3年生）はマット運動をしています。
今日の授業では、様々な形のピラミッドつくりが課題でした。グループ毎に工夫を凝らし、
どこに重点を置けば作れるのか、相談し合いながら挑戦しています。

難しそうな内容も、互いに声を掛け合い助け合いながら完成できると楽しさ倍増ですね。
新しい事にチャレンジする面白さを実感し、体育館はとっても満足げな笑顔で溢れていました。

The Grade 7 boys are seen here playing Gym Baseball, but is it baseball? This game rules are similar but instead of using a bat and baseball they are being asked to use their hands a .... cricket bat ... a unihoc stick?
The skills required are still the same; the challenge to run around the bases to home are just as exciting and the home runs occasionally hit always earn the admiration of their team-mates. Outs taken by the fielding team are celebrated in the usual style and although winning assumes some importance, ultimately the end of game discussions are full of excitement about the "What ifs...", the "If onlys..." and "Did you see...".
Baseball ... possibly!"

All Junior High School Girls PE Classes are participating in a Gymnastics unit of work. The unit begins with partner and small group activities aimed at challenging the student’s physical abilities and requires them to rely on each other and work as a team to create a variety of balances.

Today the Grade 7 students attempted a class pyramid where every student was involved in the pyramid. Due to some uneven numbers a few students were not in the final pyramid but the process was very much trial and error with many changes made to positioning of people and supporters needed for safety.

Today’s lesson was very exciting and the students were determined to finish the challenge. Mercury and Venus 7 even managed to keep the pyramid long enough to pose for a photo!

Jazz部は8月16日に神戸文化会館大ホールで行われたJAJE Student Jazz Festivalに参加し奨励賞を受賞しました。大会参加を機に、活動の課題を見出し更にレベルの高い演奏を目指して各自が頑張っています。写真はトロンボーンの生徒が基礎練習に取り組んでいる様子です。練習の成果が実を結び一層活躍できるよう願っています。

先週の土日に行われた、第57回広島県中学校総合体育大会の結果をお知らせします。
福山市は「薔薇の町」として知られており、会場も福山ローズアリーナという可愛い名前でした。

　
本校からは、中三の高村亮くんが出場しました。
結果は男子1500m自由形　第３位
　　　　　　　　400m自由形　第５位　でした。

高村くんは中三なので、中学水泳部としての活動は、これで最後です。
しかし高校でも、続けていくことを話してくれました！

勉強・通学そして水泳・・両立は大変だと思いますが、中学時代にこれをやり抜いたという経験は
大人になった時に、大きな糧になります。
生徒には、どんな分野でもかまわないので、自分だけの得意分野を見つけて自信をつけて欲しいと
思います。

中学校３年生と高校１年生書道選択生が、授業で取り組んだ作品を「天満書道祭」に出品しました。
この書道祭は広島でも伝統のある書道展ですが、そこで特別賞「広島市教育委員会賞」１名、
特選６名（中・高）、金賞５０名（中・高）受賞という良い結果を残すことができました。
また学校賞も受賞いたしました。

授業では技能の上達はもちろんですが、書くことを通して、集中力を養うこと・粘り強く取り組むことの
大切さを学んでいます。現在、中学校２年生も作品展に出品することを目標に作品制作に取り組んで
います。

秋が近づいてきました。秋の一番大きな学校行事は文化祭です。

今年度の文化祭（10月25日、26日）のメインのイベントは、各クラスに国を割り当てた
万国博です。ネイティブの先生の協力で日本、インド、ニュージーランド、カンボジア、
タイ、アメリカ、モーリシャス、フィリピン、アイルランド、オーストラリア、イギリス、中国、
カナダの在日領事館に問い合わせ、資料を取り寄せたり、各国の歴史や文化を調べたり
する予定です。

今日のＬＨＲでは各クラスどんな展示を行うのか、話し合いを行いました。

今日から期末試験が始まりました。

試験は午前中だけですので、午後になると課外授業の生徒以外はおらず、とても校内が静かです。

しかし、職員室を見ると・・・
明日の試験のために問題をチェックする先生、今日あった試験の採点や得点入力をする先生など、
試験を円滑に運営するためにいつもと同じ活気ある風景がありました。生徒がテストに安心して
取り組めるよう、私たち教員もがんばっています。

今日は前期期末試験第二日目でした。

生徒たちは真剣な表情で試験に臨んでいました。
試験が終わった後も、先生たちに質問する姿が見られました。

明日からの休みでもう一踏ん張り。
悔いの残らないように、努力してほしいものです。

文化祭ＰＴＡ活動説明会を９月２７日（土）午前１０時より体育館にて行います。
先日お配りした文化祭ＰＴＡ活動のご案内に対して、多くの保護者の皆様よりご参加のお返事を頂きました。ご協力ありがとうございます。

また、私学振興大会が１０月５日（日）午後２時半より広島国際会議場フェニックスホールにて開催されます。（同時開催２００８私学フェスタ）

試験は、自分の力を知るうえでとても大切なものです。
今の自分の強みは何なのか、弱みは何なのか。
自分の学習の良さは何なのか、課題は何なのか。
弱点克服のために、どうしていけばいいのか。
試験の結果からたくさんのことを学び、これからの学習に活かしていって欲しいと思います。

今日から三泊四日の日程で、中学三年生が修学旅行に出発しました。

単なる名所、旧跡の観光ではなく、長野県の伊那谷で、農家にファームステイし、
様々な体験を積んだり、五平餅作りや炭焼き等のアウトドア体験も予定に組み込まれています。

生徒達はみな、大いなる期待と少々の緊張の入り混じった表情で出発していきました。

昨日の中学3年生に引き続き、今日は高校２年生が修学旅行に旅立ちました。

朝９時２４分に広島駅を新幹線で出発し、東京に向かいました。
今回の行程は、

１日目：国会議事堂、浅草、水上バス、お台場
２日目：東京大学、グループ研修
３日目：東京ディズニーランド
４日目：横浜　　です。

天気が心配ですが、楽しみにしていた修学旅行にみんな笑顔で出発することができました。生徒全員にとって一生の思い出になればと思います。
