Tanabata Tea Ceremony

2008-07-07

Today is a special day when two lovers Altair and Vega who were forbidden to pursue their love, can meet on the 7th day of the 7th month. These lovers are none other than stars in the Aquila (eagle) constellation visible in summer in the northern skies. There are different versions in Greek, Roman and Indian mythology related to this event when the stars align close to each other. In Japan Tanabata is celebrated on this day and we at AICJ celebrate with a Tea Ceremony. This Tea Ceremony is special for one more reason – our G9 students who are leaving for a short study period to New Zealand are invited to participate in the ceremony.
Together staff and students relished the green tea and accompanied sweet (shaped like the Milky Way ‘river’)and felt tradition come alive. The tatamis and wooden furniture of our exclusive Tea Room made everyone feel so cool inspite of the summer heat. The expression of the students showed their appreciation for this beautiful ceremony.
